The James Bonine House and the Underground Railroad, 18970 M-60, Vandalia MI

We were not looking for anything specific as we drove through Vandalia but historic markers always make us stop for a closer look.
Some quick research on the town brought us to the James Bonine house, currently closed to tours. Mr. Bonine, who was a Quaker, built the home in the 1850s and set aside land for freedom seekers and freedmen.
His carriage house across the street was used to hide and/or shelter fleeing slaves.
Restoration efforts are underway and we wish them all the best in preserving this piece of history.
